Pensioner shaken by ‘horrific’ attack

A MAN has been arrested and bailed over an armed burglary in which an 88-year-old woman suffered knife wounds in her own home.

Police investigating the incident in Worksop yesterday said that they still needed to speak to anyone with information about the burglary, which took place last Saturday evening.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said yesterday: “A burglar entered the home of an 88-year-old woman at about 9.45pm, armed with a six-inch knife.

“He demanded money from the woman but she refused, tried to fight him off, and suffered a cut to her hand during the struggle.

“The burglar carried out a search of the address before fleeing on foot. It is not thought anything was stolen.

“He was white and wore a grey hooded top, which was pulled over his face, and blue jeans.

“The victim was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been discharged.”

One man, a 31-year-old from Worksop, was arrested and by yesterday had been released on police bail.

However, officers are still seeking further information on the burglary.

Detective Sergeant Rick Jones, from Newark CID, said the woman suffered a painful cut to her hand and has also been left “extremely shaken” by what happened.

He added: “This was a horrific attack on a vulnerable, elderly woman in her own home.
