Pensioners injured at road crossing

TWO pensioners were injured after they were hit by a car when they attempted to cross the road at a pelican crossing.

The elderly couple were involved in the accident at around 6.40pm on Easter Sunday on the A6102 Ridgeway Road dual carriageway in Sheffield.

It is thought the pair were hit by a silver Ford car as they waited on a pedestrian island in the central reservation of the busy road. A police spokesman said: "The car was travelling along Ridgeway Road towards the city centre when it was in collision with the elderly couple. They were crossing from the Newlands Road side of the carriageway towards the junction with Corker Road. At this stage in the investigation, it does not appear that the crossing had been activated."
