People traffickers get $32bn a year globally

Criminals involved in people trafficking are making $32bn a year worldwide but two in five United Nations member countries are yet to secure a single conviction against those responsible, a Yorkshire-based expert has claimed .

Nick Kinsella, a former head of the UK Human Trafficking Centre, said Britain had made significant strides forward in tackling the problem but much more work needed to be done.

The former South Yorkshire Police officer will be among the speakers at a conference, Human Trafficking in the UK, to be held at the Showroom Cinema in Sheffield on Tuesday, November 1.

The event, organised by Sheffield Hallam University, will also feature speeches from experts including UK Border Agency officials, the Salvation Army’s Major Anne Read and one of the university’s senior lecturers, Ray Nolan.

Mr Kinsella said there had been 116 people-trafficking convictions in the UK in the last 12 months, and more than 1,800 potential victims had been referred to authorities in the last two years.
