In the financial world, it has emerged that Hull is top of a league table of ‘low wage, high welfare’ cities. In sport, Leeds United have signed midfielder Toumani Diagouraga. Here are four things you should know in Yorkshire so far today...

Unlawful killing question over Hillsborough

At the time of the Hillsborough disaster, did the behaviour of South Yorkshire Police’s Chief Superintendent, David Duckenfield, amount to a criminal act? West Yorkshire Police, which is the biggest in the county, has carried out a shake-up of the way it deals with foreign criminals. They admitted that, until recently, proper checks for previous convictions were carried out on between ten and fifteen per cent of around 500 ‘foreign national offenders’ arrested each month. Naz Shah, Bradford West MP and member of the Home Affairs Select Committee, said the lack of checks was “unacceptable”.

Hull tops ‘low-wage, high-welfare’ list

Chancellor George Osborne is trying to create a ‘northern powerhouse’ economy and reduce dependence in Yorkshire on welfare - but the scale of the challenge has been laid out. None of Yorkshire’s cities are delivering the “high wage, low welfare” economy the Chancellor has vowed to create, according to analysis. Hull is struggling the most; the average weekly wage is £376 and the Government spends £3,769 per person on state support.

Leeds sign Diagouraga from Brentford

Brentford were a surprise success story last season - and the man who won their fans’ player of the year prize, Toumani Diagouraga, has signed for Leeds United. He has joined for a fee of £575,000 on a two-and-a-half year deal. The 28-year-old midfielder, who was also pursued by Glasgow Rangers, passed a medical over the weekend. He is now in line to make his debut - against Brentford at Griffin Park tomorrow night.
