Goole MP Andrew Percy said he was disappointed, but he and campaigners are still trying to “pursue every avenue available to us to stop this dirty development”.

Two consultations over the facility, which will store, process and treat up to 100,000 tonnes of waste material, including bio-solids, which is the solid material left over following waste water treatment, attracted hundreds of objections.

Kathryn Richardson, area environment manager for the Environment Agency, said the plant would be built and operated “in a way that will not harm human health or the environment”.

The permit sets out legally binding conditions that Knottingley-based 4Recycling Ltd must follow to protect air quality, groundwater and surface water to ensure the safe storage, management and treatment of wastes, the EA said.

It also imposes conditions to minimise the risk of accidents, noise and odour.

Objectors insist the narrow road to the disused peatworks at Swinefleet is insufficient to take HGV and tanker traffic.
