Grieving Yorkshire couple left heartbroken after huge soil mound is dumped on three-month-old son's grave with teddy tossed aside

A couple were left heartbroken after a “callous and heartless” gravedigger dumped more than four feet of soil on their three-month-old son’s grave and tossed his teddy aside.

Jack Campleman, aged 23, was left in disbelief when his partner Laura Robinson, aged 22, called him from the cemetery to say a massive mound of dirt had been left on their son Oliver’s grave.

Laura had gone to Bridlington Cemetery in East Yorkshire - where Oliver was laid to rest - on Tuesday afternoon when she saw what had happened.

Jack raced to the cemetery after the phone call and said it was “horrifying” as he could see the four-and-a-half foot tall mound from the gates - a five minute walk from Oliver’s grave.

He was told by the gravedigger there was “no other place” for him to put the dirt.

The couple also said the widow of a man buried next to their son had found the teddies and flowers left for Oliver on her husband's grave, after they had been tossed aside.

Oliver was born healthy on October 6, 2020 after the couple suffered through two miscarriages, but Oliver suddenly fell ill in early December and was rushed to Scarborough General Hospital.

He was then transferred to Leeds General Infirmary where he spent three weeks on ICU where doctors fought to save his life.

Oliver was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease - a rare condition which affects the part of the body’s cells which are responsible for generating energy.

But sadly, the disease is difficult to detect early due to the number of symptoms which patients typically display and Oliver's liver began to fail, followed shortly by his kidney and then the debilitating illness spread to his brain and caused him to suffer from multiple seizures.

Tragically, baby Oliver died at 10.45pm on New Year’s Day.

Jack said he felt like it was the “ultimate mark of disrespect” for them to toss little Oliver’s teddy and flowers away - on top of everything else.

He said the emotions were still incredibly raw as Oliver, who was the couple’s first son after two miscarriages, only passed away four weeks ago.

Jack, from Bridlington, said: “My son has only just passed away and we are still grieving. It’s such a difficult process for us as young parents.

“With something as tragic as that. When you think you’ve laid him to rest. And you see that. It just breaks your heart.

“My mother and partner had gone up to his grave and she rang me and was telling me there was a massive pile of dirt on his grave.

“I thought it might just be a bit but never expected to see that mound. I got the picture and drove straight there.

“Even if it was the only place, you don’t put it there. It’s my son’s resting place. What’s going through your head? It’s so careless.

“The audacity to say you don’t have anywhere else to put it. You don’t care.

“He had a teddy and flowers that we’d put on his grave stone, which he chucked on the grave next to it - it’s just no respect.

“To put my son’s belongings on someone else’s grave - it’s the ultimate mark of disrespect. It’s callous and heartless.

“His death is still so raw and this is just baffling.”

Laura, who has been with Jack for three years, said she was upset and shocked when she saw her son’s grave covered in dirt.

The bartender said: “I was in disbelief, I was upset. I couldn’t understand why this had happened. It was shocking.

“It doesn’t make any sense. It’s just so insensitive.”

The mound was removed and placed back into the neighbouring grave on Wednesday.
