Midwives and West Yorkshire Police still searching for mother of stillborn baby found dead and wrapped in pink towel in Bradford

The mother of a baby who was found dead and abandoned in a beach towel in Bradford still has not come forward, say police.

The newborn baby girl was found on Bowling Back Lane in the city on Thursday last week (August 20) with detectives still searching for her out of concern for her health.

A post-mortem examination carried out on the infant has confirmed she was sadly stillborn.

West Yorkshire Police has renewed its appeal for the woman, reiterating concerns for her welfare and that she may be suffering with both physical and mental symptoms post-partum.

Detectives believe the woman's pregnancy is likely to have been concealed from her family, and as the birth was not carried out in a hospital she may need urgent medical attention.

The baby girl was wrapped in a pink towel, which depicted the island of Fuerteventura in yellow on a purple background. There were various pictures associated with tropical locations on the towel also including fish, sea horses and a palm tree. A picture of a towel similar to one found swaddling the girl has been released by the force.

Sara Hollins, Head of Midwifery at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Police and partner agencies have worked tirelessly for the past week to try and trace mum of the baby.

"We are renewing our appeal today to urge mum or her relatives to come forward and speak to us.

"We are incredibly concerned for the welfare of the mum, as the birth of the baby would have been extremely distressing and there may have been physical complications and we want to ensure that you are OK and get access to the help you may need.

“We are also appealing to the public for any information about anyone you thought may be pregnant, or perhaps may have concealed their pregnancy. I would urge you to come forward with any information, which may prove vital to help us with our enquiries."

West Yorkshire Police has urged anyone who knows someone who may have been recently pregnant, or thought to have been concealing a pregnancy, to get in contact as it may prove vital information for the investigation.
