Ronan Eyles suffered a small bleed on his brain after he rode into the path of an oncoming car in May last year, his mother rushing to his side after hearing the impact.

Airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary, 20 miles away, he spent three nights in hospital before being allowed home to recover.

Ronan's accident is to feature in an episode of Helicopter ER, airing on Monday, and his mother Tina has spoken of the experience.

The boy had just come home from playing football with friends when he decided to play on his bike, she said, grabbing his helmet before leaving the house.

“I heard this loud bang and I knew instantly it was him," said Ms Eyles. "I rushed out and found him lying in a pool of blood. The poor driver of the vehicle was stood there in shock and I thought I had lost Ronan that day.”

Speaking of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, she said: “I just want to say from the bottom of my heart thank you so much, because they were so brilliant and I honestly think if it wasn’t for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the fact that he was wearing a helmet, he would have been in a different situation.”

The episode will air at 10pm on Channel Really and also features a worker crushed in Halifax and a bike crash in the Yorkshire Dales.
