Mystery stranger leaves box of Yorkshire Tea at GP surgery with note to say it's what 'Sir Captain Tom would want'

Doctors at a GP surgery were left humbled after a kind stranger left a box of Yorkshire Tea with them inspired by the goodwill of Sir Captain Tom Moore.

The charitable gesture was made on Wednesday morning when a woman left the box of tea bags with receptionists at Wollaton Park Medical Centre in Nottingham, hours after it was announced the Yorkshire-born Army veteran had passed away.

Dr Jamie Parker, a partner at the practice who has been there for 10 years, said he was bowled over by the good deed, and took to Twitter to reach out to the mystery benefactor writing, "if there is one thing, above all, that unites us...it's a cup of tea".

A note left on the box said, "For all the NHS staff, because Sir Captain Tom Moore would want you to have nice tea".

Dr Parker said: "I went through to the reception area and on the desk where the prescriptions are put there was the box of Yorkshire Tea.

"Apparently a lady came in and dropped it off for us."

The gesture of goodwill was not a marketing tactic by Yorkshire Tea, although the Harrogate-based company replied to Dr Parker's tweet and has since said it would be sending more supplies.

"I'm sure there are probably more deserving people of it," he added.

"We are going to send them to one of our local nursing homes."

Sir Captain Tom Moore, originally from Keighley, died on Tuesday shortly after contracting Covid-19. The 100-year-old made international headlines and inspired millions last year after raising more than £30m for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden at his Bedfordshire home.

The Army veteran had not been able to be vaccinated for the virus due to being on medication for pneumonia, his family said.

Following the news of his passing, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a national clap in Sir Captain Tom's honour at 6pm yesterday.

Dr Parker himself also made headlines last year as Nottingham's "singing doctor", after a video of him singing "Stay at Home" to the tune of Disney's Frozen song "Let It Go" went viral on social media.
