The owner of Southfield, an isolated property between Cowden and Mappleton, on the west side of the B1242, is seeking planning permission from East Riding Council for 30 pitches for touring caravans as well as tents.

While the parish council supports the proposal, saying it could boost local businesses, concerns have been raised from two residents about caravans accessing the site off the busy coastal road, flooding and noise, lighting and disturbance.

One objector said Cowden was already overpopulated with caravans, after numbers went up by 81 last year alone.

The site is just over the road from an existing static caravan site, Cowden Holiday Park.

On the council's planning portal the resident states: "I am aware the council likes to promote tourism but this constant increase in caravans most not be to the detriment of the hamlet of Cowden or the safety of road users and pedestrians."

However one supporter, a motorhome owner from Barnsley, said they would love to visit the site.

The development would see an agricultural building converted into an indoor recreation area and bathrooms and a garage to a site office.

Officers said revised proposals have addressed highways concerns and the Lead Local Flood Authority and the council’s Land Drainage Team have no objections after receiving additional drainage information

They are recommending approval at a meeting of the eastern area planning sub committee, which will be held by conference call next Monday.

They conclude: "The proposals are considered to be an appropriate small-scale tourist accommodation development which would contribute to the local economy and would be acceptable in terms of their impact on the surrounding area,"
