Top that - new Tour de Yorkshire jersey pays tribute to county champions

THE 2014 Tour de France Grand Depart version flew off the shelves faster than the peloton piling off the top of Holme Moss, and the 2016 Tour de Yorkshire official jersey is expected to become another cycling classic.

The dark blue jersey has been inspired by the heroic exploits of Yorkshire Cricket Club following their outstanding achievement in winning back-to-back county championships.

It was unveiled earlier today by Welcome to Yorkshire, A.S.O and Milltag, and features the Yorkshire rose, the names of each host town, the Tour de Yorkshire logo and a distinctive Y pattern.

The men’s race starts on the Friday and climaxes in Scarborough on Sunday May 1 at the end of a marathon 198-km stage, whilst the women’s race will be ridden over a 135-km course between Otley and Doncaster on Saturday April 30.

The commemorative jersey is made by Milltag, who will also design and produce the podium jerseys for the race winners.

Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire said: “The new jersey reflects Yorkshire’s proud sporting heritage and is a superb tribute to this year’s race.

“Each host town is named on the back and I very much look forward to seeing it being proudly worn by riders across the world.”

Milltage designer Ed Cowburn said: “The design has evolved from the 2015 edition, and the greatest difference is the colour. A darker blue has been added as a nod to the colours of back-to-back county champions, Yorkshire Cricket Club.

“To celebrate the start and finish towns for each stage, we have created a graphic focused around a Yorkshire rose that appears subtly on the back of jersey and will feature across the race winners’ jerseys too. The Y pattern inspired by Yorkshire’s textile heritage also features.”

The commemorative jersey is short-sleeved and made from a soft polyester blend with high wicking qualities. The jersey and other merchandise can be purchased from the official Tour de Yorkshire shop (www.Yorkshire.com/shop )
