Wardens surprise elderly Esme with a birthday singalong as she turns 97

Esme, pictured above, has said it was "one of the best birthdays ever" after she was surprised by kind council wardens who presented her with flowers, balloons and a cake.

Her usual helper is self-isolating, so the wardens have been helping out with shopping and, on hearing it was her birthday, had insisted such an age was worth celebrating.

“The community spirit of the people of Bradford District knows no bounds," said Coun Abdul Jabar, the authority's executive member for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety.

"I am constantly amazed by the kindness and generosity of our wardens. This is just one example of how all our wardens are going way above and beyond in their care of members of the community during these difficult times."
