Petition calls for village crossing

More than 300 people have signed a petition calling for a pedestrian crossing in Millhouse Green, near Penistone.

The petition, organised by Millhouse Green Community Association, asks for a crossing on Manchester Road to help people cross the busy A628.

Chairman of the association, Ingrid Law, is to hand over the petition to Barnsley Council. She said: “We have a 40mph limit through the village, often with cars exceeding that, and my concern is that there will be a serious accident before too long.”

Ms Law also said road safety was one of the issues highlighted in a survey carried out when the association was set up.

“We can’t promise this petition will be successful or sort all the problems out, but it is a start”, she said.

“It also indicates the strength of feeling in the village that so many people have signed it.”

The association was set up at the beginning of the year to tackle issues raised by residents.

So far they have liaised with Barnsley Council to stop dog fouling, organised a litter pick and secured funding for a new village sign and landscaping.
