Photographers urged to focus on wildlife

AMATEUR photographers are being encouraged to capture the varied wildlife of the Humber estuary as part of a new competition being launched by the RSPB and Associated British Ports.

Prizes worth £100 are on offer and winners will see their pictures displayed at a public exhibition at Blacktoft Sands nature reserve near Goole.

It is hoped the project will inspire a wider appreciation of the estuary, which is home to bitterns, marsh harriers, hares, deer, water voles and otters.

The RSPB’s Humber Programme manager, Harriet Dennison, said: “We want people to grab their cameras and take some stunning images, which show off the wealth of birds, plants and mammals the estuary has to offer.”

The conservation charity has been working to protect the natural environment around the Humber for more than 35 years and manages more than 1,200 hectares of land in the area.

ABP’s port director for Hull and Goole, Matt Jukes, said: “ABP is very pleased to support the Humber wildlife photography competition because we recognise that economic development and nature conservation can be enhanced together.

“It is no exaggeration to say that the Humber ports are the most essential trading arteries for the flow of goods into and out of the UK and, as the UK’s leading ports group, ABP clearly understands that we have a role to play in the protection of the valuable habitats present on the Humber by ensuring that our business here develops in a sustainable way.”

The closing date for entries is May 31.
