Picket halts collections by town’s bin men

BIN collections were disrupted in Huddersfield when workers refused to cross a picket line set up by striking office workers.

Adminstrative support staff from Kirklees Council yesterday picketed a bin depot to “hit the council where it hurts”.

Binmen are not on strike but refused to cross the picket line to reach their lorries.

Members of Unison are staging a three-day strike in a dispute over cuts to pay and jobs.

Households in Huddersfield who due to have their bins collected yesterday will have to wait two weeks for them to be emptied.

A council spokesman said the authority had worked to minimise redundancies.

“The actions of staff from the refuse collection service are regrettable,” he added.
