ENGLAND MAY still be fighting for victory in France, but one primary school in North Yorkshire is already one step ahead.

Barkston Ash Primary School football team celebrated in style yesterday with an open top bus tour after becoming national champions in the world’s largest football tournament for 10-12 year olds.

They won the small schools category of the English Schools Football Association Danone Nations Cup which sees 32 countries participate and involves 2.5m boys and girls.

The winning team boarded the bus at Barkston Ash with the trophy they secured at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium before touring Tadcaster and other schools in the area, cheering to the delighted applauding onlookers.

Charlotte Broos, corporate responsibility manager at Danone, said: “We really wanted to organise a celebration for the team, they were fantastic throughout the tournament and we hope the open top bus tour was the icing on the cake.

“The cup celebrates the role of the local community so taking them for a champions’ open top bus tour was a great way for them to thank their supporters.”
