Pile-up chaos hits drivers on M62

COMMUTERS endured an afternoon of traffic chaos after two large accidents brought traffic to a standstill in parts of West Yorkshire.

An eight vehicle pile-up on the M62 resulted in both carriageways being closed for more than two hours during the evening rush hour while air ambulance crews attended the injured.

The incident, which involved a heavy goods vehicle, took place at shortly after 5pm on the westbound slip road on the M62 as it joins the southbound M1.

Despite the scale of the disruption and the number of vehicles involved no serious injuries are understood to have been sustained by those involved.

Earlier in Leeds, traffic in the western half of the city was halted after two cars collided on the A647 Stanningley bypass at Pudsey.

The incident took place at shortly after 4pm near the Asda Owlcotes centre and involved a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Yaris.

One of the car's occupants had to be freed from the wreckage by specialist fire crews and police were forced to close the bypass heading towards Bradford for more than an hour while the debris was cleared, resulting in long tailbacks stretching more than two miles through the Bramley and Armley areas.

The casualty was later taken to Leeds General Infirmary by ambulance. Their injuries are not thought to be serious.
