Pipe band enlisted to drum up trade

A pipe band will be trying to drum up trade for hard-hit businesses in Beverley this weekend.

Beverley Town Council and the Beverley and District Pipe Band are joining forces to stage a pilot event tomorrow.

The idea is not just to bring in live entertainment but to encourage shoppers to visit areas which have had a downturn in trade.

Coun David Elvidge, who came up with the idea, said: "We're going to give it a go in Coronation Gardens, on North Bar Within, to see if people have an appetite for live music on a Saturday within the town centre.

"The Beverley and District Pipe Band have quite a following, having appeared at many local festivals and events in recent years, and have kindly offered to play for free to see if this project will work."

The band will be giving two 30-minute performances at 11am and 1pm. Town councillors will discuss the idea further to decide whether to put live music on a regular footing.
