Pipelines clean-up moves into next stage

CREWS working on a £11m revamp of Sheffield's water mains have arrived in Rivelin Valley Road to begin the latest phase of work.

The three-year project, which began in October 2008, has already seen large and small pipes across the city replaced, relined or cleaned.

This next phase of work will see attention turn to the pipes under Rivelin Valley Road, between the junction of Rivelin Road and Rivelin water treatment works on the A57 Manchester Road.

In order to carry out the six-week-long works safely, three sets of temporary traffic lights will be in operation and parking will be restricted at various location along the route.

A spokesman for Yorkshire Water said: "We're very grateful to Sheffield for the patience and understanding residents and visitors have shown whilst we've been working on this scheme.

"Their support has enabled us to make fantastic progress and most people seem to appreciate the work is vital if we're to enhance water quality and reduce the number of incidents of discolouration.

"We recognise that this latest phase of work is likely to cause some disruption, but we want to reassure customers that we'll be doing everything we possibly can to complete the work as quickly as possible and return the road back to normal."

Since beginning work in October 2008, Yorkshire Water has cleaned, restored and replaced more than 52 kilometres of water mains in Sheffield.

The spokesman added: "As well as inviting world-famous pavement artist Julian Beever to create a 3D image in the city centre to help raise awareness of the project in July, Yorkshire Water has also donated a total of 3,000 to local causes as a thank you and to give something back to the Sheffield community."
