Pirate golf plan could create 50 jobs

NEARLY 50 jobs could be created by a plan due for the go-ahead today to create a pirate-themed golf course at Scarborough Sea Life Centre.

Operators Merlin Entertainments want to turn a grassed area and some staff car parking spaces near the North Bay attraction into Pirate Adventure links, creating 14 full-time and 33 part-time posts, plus a new manager. Bosses say the loss of parking bays will be balanced by encouraging car sharing, providing bike storage areas, and adjusting shift patterns.

However, North Yorkshire Police have raised concerns because the Sea Life Centre is at isolated Scalby Mills at the far end of the North Bay.

Maintaining public order on the promenade already involves police vehicles negotiating the narrow access between the rows of chalets and the edge of the prom above the beach. The county police liaison team has told planners while they have no objections to the application in principle they are concerned about the site.

"It is quite isolated and could become a gathering place for both youths and homeless persons," a spokesman said.

But the developers are promising increased security to address the concerns.
