Plan to keep incinerator at capacity

PLANS have been submitted to Sheffield Council to increase the amount of waste taken from neighbouring towns to be treated at the city's incinerator.

No changes will be made to the external appearance of the

incinerator, near the Parkway, if the planning application is agreed.

The proposals are instead to increase the amount of waste treated from Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster and North East Derbyshire, as the amount of waste collected in Sheffield has fallen.

If the application is refused, the facility – which is designed to handle 225,000 tonnes of waste and provides heat to more than 140 buildings across the city – may begin operating as a shortfall.

Nigel Williams, director of Veolia Environmental Services, which runs the incinerator, said: "The Energy Recovery Facility currently receives some waste from neighbouring areas and the proposed change is aimed

at maintaining the facility to capacity so that in turn, heat and electricity generation is optimised.

"The planning application will not lead to any physical changes, nor will it increase the existing capacity of the facility."
