Planners give pass marks to rugby league ground

PLANNING chiefs are recommending that councillors give plans to create a new 13,300- capacity stadium for Castleford Tigers the green light.

Last week it was revealed that bosses at Castleford Tigers have struck a deal, thought to be worth around £50m, to sell their current ground to a supermarket developer and pump the cash into building their new home at Whistler Drive at Glasshoughton.

Members of Wakefield Council’s planning and highways committee will meet today to discuss the application and are recommending that members back the scheme, subject to a number of conditions being met.

The council has received two letters objecting to the plan and 96 in favour. Opponents are worried about traffic and fear those attending will park on residential streets.

Those in favour say it will bring jobs and investment to an area that has suffered years of industrial decline, enhance leisure facilities in the area and say it is vital for the growth and sustainability of the rugby club.

Supporters also hope the new stadium will help Castleford Tigers in its bid to remain in the Super League. The rugby league club is in the process of finalising its 2012 Super League licence application with a view to securing its future in the top flight.

The stadium would be used for hosting rugby league matches, concerts and community sports events. The site will have parking for around 930 cars.

The club has said that if permission is granted its new stadium is expected to be completed in time for the 2013 season.
