The plans, which are in the early stages, will see half of the land at the Wellington Street site transformed into 237 properties – made up of 121 two-bedroom apartments and 116 one-bedroom apartments.

The properties will be built for the private rented sector and will be aimed at young professionals.

The first phase of the plans for the site also include a bronze-clad, rooftop residents lounge over-looking the river, with additional space for a restaurant and bar.

The building will be 18 storeys tall, falling to 11 storeys closer the River Aire.

Its basement car park will have 72 vehicle spaces and 140 bicycle spaces.

Demolitions crews cleared the 4.6 acre site in 2014 and only the landmark clock tower remains of the old newspaper office building, which was home to both The Yorkshire Post and the Yorkshire Evening Post for more than 40 years.

Previously, in February 2015, outline planning permission was granted for a mixed used scheme, made up of three office buildings and one residential or hotel building.

The new plans will be discussed by Leeds City Council’s city plans panel on Thursday, June 9.

It comes as plans are also under way for an 11-storey residential scheme nearby.

Hallborough Properties is looking to submit plans to turn the Grade II-listed 17 Wellington Street building into 35 apartments.

The plans include a glazed bridge that would link the building with a new contemporary 11-storey block at neighbouring site 49 Aire Street, which is a former warehouse and office building.

The plans for the site also include space for a new restaurant as well as a gym for use by residents.
