Plans for new council homes to be revealed

People are being invited to view York Council’s proposed plans for the first stage of a project to build council homes.

The council hopes to build up to 30 new homes on the former Beckfield Lane refuse site, subject to planning permission being granted at a later date.

The development was outlined in the council’s recently-published, five-year housing plan and the proposals include a range of houses and apartments, with a mix of new council homes for rent and also for properties for sale on the open market.

Any surplus raised from these sales will go on to subsidise the building of more homes in the future.

The designs will be similar to those used at Archer Close, a project which saw the first council houses to be built in more than 20 years in the city.

To give people a chance to learn more about the project, a drop-in event will be held today at Carr Junior School, Ostman Road, Acomb, YO26 5QA, from 4.30-8pm. Representatives from the council’s housing development team and the architect will be available to meet residents and answer their questions.

Coun Tracey Simpson-Laing, the council’s cabinet member for health, housing and adult social care, said last night: “With our waiting list edging ever higher, it’s becoming more and more urgent to provide local people with good-quality, affordable housing.

“Adding an element of housing for private sale works well to help finance future building projects and to create a sustainable, mixed community,” Coun Tracey Simpson-Laing added.

It is proposed that a planning application will be submitted at the end of this month, at which stage residents will be able to comment formally on the proposals.

Anyone unable to attend the drop-in event but who would like to discuss the proposals is asked to contact [email protected] or call 01904 554 153.

There are currently nearly 5,000 people on the council’s waiting list.
