Plans for new police station go on show

MULTI-million pound plans for a new police station in Harrogate are to go on display next Tuesday .

The blueprints for the station, which will cost tens of millions of pounds and be located on the outskirts of town, can be seen at the Conference Centre that day.

Residents will get a chance to see detailed proposals for the site at Beckwith Knowle, Beckwith Head Road, and question senior officers on plans for a smaller satellite station being built in the town centre.

Councillor Les Ellington, cabinet member for public protection and rural affairs at Harrogate Council, said: "People are concerned about the lack of transport links to the new station when the old one was in the middle of town.

"But my main concern is that a properly manned satellite station is built in the centre.

"The police need to have a proper presence in the middle of town, if the new plans do not provide this then they simply will not work."

Earlier this year it was announced that the current police station, which opened in the town centre since the 1930s, will be sold and replaced by a state-of-the-art centre.

North Yorkshire Police Authority said the move is part of a major overhaul of police buildings planned across the county in the next 10 years.

Chief Constable Grahame Maxwell said: "This is a great opportunity to come along and see the proposals for the new police station and the progress that we have made so far."

The plans will be on show next Tuesday in the Queen's Suite between 11.30am and 7.30pm.

Meanwhile, the Environment Agency has opened an office in Fisher Green, Ripon, as a contact point about its 14.4m scheme to reduce flood risks to 548 residential and 96 commercial properties.
