Plaque for Churchill home

A green plaque to honour former Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill was unveiled yesterday at his childhood home in St James’s Place, London.

Westminster City Council deputy leader Cllr Robert Davis said: “We were rather upset that English Heritage didn’t think it was appropriate to put a plaque here so we thought we would jump in and do it.”

The plaque at 29 St James’s Place, SW1, is sponsored by Lord Rothschild, the owner of the property.

He said: “We had a long negotiation with English Heritage who normally only allow one plaque per person. I think this is very good for the neighbourhood.”

Lady Soames, the youngest and only surviving child of Churchill, unveiled the plaque.
