Plaque unveiled on newly-discovered well

Local historian Malcolm Neesam and Harrogate Council's project manager, Kath Rumford, at the 19th century well on King's Road, Harrogate, which was discovered earlier this year when a team of council contractors started digging up the road.

Yesterday, Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, took time out from the Y10 Tourism Conference being held in the spa town to unveil a plaque on the stone-lined well, which is believed to date from the early 1800s.

Harrogate in Bloom member, Caroline Bayliss, said: "We are delighted that the well has been officially unveiled and it will be a real hit for visitors."

The well was discovered when contractors dug up the road to create a new tree-lined boulevard, which is part of a 13m investment in the Harrogate International Conference centre. The well would have been used to provide household drinking water for the Ingilby family who farmed in the town until 1810.

Harrogate has the highest concentration of different mineral springs than any other town in the world.
