Plastic bottles join refuse collections

PLASTIC bottles will be included in refuse collections alongside glass and cans in some areas of Barnsley after the council's ruling Cabinet approved a pilot scheme.

Leading members of Barnsley Council said they had agreed to test the plastic recycling service "in response to a demand from households" across the borough. All plastic bottles, including clear water and soft drinks bottles and white milk containers will be collected from brown bins or green recycling boxes in the pilot area.

The test neighbourhoods are Darton, Staincross, Mapplewell, Barugh Green, Kexborough, Cudworth, Shafton and Grimethorpe.

A council spokesman said: "The mix of property types, access issues and recycling activities in these areas is representative of the borough as a whole."

The scheme will start on Monday, September 6. If successful it will be introduced across Barnsley in two phases, the first beginning next February and the second in September 2011.
