Platinum milestone for couple

ALMOST nine decades after they first met as schoolchildren in Sheffield, Frank and Hilda Oxley have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with a party for friends and family.

Mr Oxley, 93, and his 92-year-old wife were born on the same street within months of each other and went to Attercliffe Council School together.

They married in April 1941 at St Bartholomew’s Church in Carbrook, and while her husband served in the Royal Navy in the Far East, Mrs Oxley worked at Davy’s Bakers in Haymarket, Sheffield.

Now the couple, who have two daughters and a grandson, have celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary with a party for family and friends at Midhurst Nursing Home in Fox Hill, Sheffield, where they both now live.

They had a visit from the Lord Mayor of Sheffield Coun Alan Law and were delighted to receive a message of congratulations from the Queen.
