Plea to keep Vulcan flying as home for bomber unveiled

Airport bosses unveiled a permanent home for the Vulcan bomber in South Yorkshire yesterday – amid new appeals to help keep the historic aircraft in the sky.

Charity workers behind the Vulcan to the Sky (VTTS) fund said earlier this year it was vital to raise £350,000 by the end of this month, but had yesterday managed to hit a total of just £190,000.

It is hoped that the aircraft’s new permanent home at Robin Hood Airport, near Doncaster, will help boost the fund, which will allow the charity to fly aeroplane at airshows this summer.

Visitors will soon be able to view the Vulcan at the Directions Finningley CIC hangar on the airport site, which has entered into an agreement with the charity to allow enthusiasts to get close to the iconic Cold War aircraft.

At an event yesterday afternoon, VTTS chief executive Dr Robert Pleming explained to local dignitaries and airport managers the importance of keeping XH558 airworthy.

He was joined by the chairman of the Vulcan to the Sky trust John Sharman, and Bill Webster, the chairman of Directions Finningley.

Donations can be made to the charity through its website at www.vulcantothesky.org or on 0845 5046 558.
