Plea to publicans over drug dealers

publicans in the Dearne valley have been warned to root out drug dealers from their premises after a police operation found two drinkers in possession of so-called MKAT, a stimulant popular among clubbers.

Officers from the Dearne safer neighbourhood team checked a number of pubs in their area on January 22 using a drugs dog to sniff out those carrying illegal substances.

One man, aged 19, from Hoyland, Barnsley, was arrested after he was found with suspected MKAT and will appear in court on possession charges in the next few weeks.

A 27-year-old man from Wombwell was also found in possession of suspected MKAT and received a caution for possession of the drug.

Insp Alan Simpson said: “Licensees know the risk of allowing their pubs to be used in this way as their license to sell alcohol can be withdrawn, similarly people who take or supply illegal drugs can expect to be arrested.

“We will continue to drop in on licensed premises unannounced in order to reduce the number of drugs in our area.

“The message to all is that illegal drugs have no place in Dearne.”
