Plea for witnesses to student death crash

POLICE investigators are seeking witnesses to a fatal collision in Sheffield in which a 19-year-old student died after being struck by a police car responding to an emergency call.

Jamie Haslett was walking near the university roundabout with two friends when the crash occurred at the junction of Broad Lane and Mappin Street at 3.45am on Wednesday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) which has launched an investigation.

Mr Haslett's family have also released a photograph of the student, who was originally from the Isle of Man and was studying at Sheffield Hallam University.

A spokesman for the university said: "Jamie was in his second year, studying BSc (Hons) Sport and Business Management. He will be sadly missed and our thoughts are with his loved ones."
