Plea to women over breast-screening

WOMEN in North East Lincolnshire are being urged to take part in a free breast-screening programme being launched next month.

The NHS provides free screening every three years for women aged 50 and over, and the latest course will be held in North East Lincolnshire between February and November.

Eligible women will be called for appointments during this period.

Nurse Rose LeBrun said: "The actual process of screening is very straightforward; it involves taking an X-ray of each breast, a mammogram. Most women find it a bit uncomfortable and a few find it painful.

"The mammogram can detect small changes in breast tissue which may indicate cancers which are too small to be felt either by the woman herself or by a doctor. I would encourage every woman who receives an invitation to make sure they go along to their appointment."

Any woman finding a lump or something unusual during their own checks should see their doctor immediately and not wait for an appointment.

Early detection means that treatments are easier and have a higher chance of success.
