Pledge in fight against malnutrition

A PLEDGE by council and health chiefs will be made tomorrow to tackle malnutrition among older people in Leeds.

Latest figures show that at any one time there could be an estimated 19,500 malnourished people in the city.

Tomorrow the Leeds Food Consensus Pledge will be signed by Linda Pollard, chairman of NHS Leeds and Brian Selby, deputy executive member for adult health and social care for Leeds Council.

The pledge will be made at a conference bringing people working in frontline services together to explore what can be done to support the most vulnerable.

The Thirst for Nutrition conference at South Leeds Stadium will feature leading experts from the city speaking about some of the existing work going on in Leeds that is supporting older people to lead more independent lives.

One of these projects is Jamie's Ministry of Food in Kirkgate Market, Leeds. The centre provides a 10-week cookery course teaching adults how to cook nutritious and affordable meals. Recently a local agency, Angel's Housekeeping, has helped 10 older people to take part in the cookery course.
