Poets to read at Hockney exhibition

A thought-provoking night is being promised at Hull’s Ferens Art gallery, which is playing host to its biggest draw.

So far nearly 40,000 people have flocked to the gallery to see David Hockney’s monumental work Bigger Trees Near Warter.

Volunteers working to promote the painting to a wide range of audiences have invited local poets to read at an event at the gallery on Friday September 9 at 6pm.

Volunteer, Christina Hamilton said: “It is part of our role as volunteers to think about how we can encourage people who may not normally come into the gallery to visit and enjoy Hockney’s work and everything the gallery has to offer.

“It promises to be a very interesting and thought-provoking evening for the senses and we hope that people who haven’t seen the painting yet and would like the chance to hear local poets read their work will come along. “

Places must be booked in advance by ringing the gallery on 01482 613902.

Measuring 40ft high by 13ft wide, the painting is made up of 50 canvases, with its sides turned in as the gallery could not fit it in any other way. It’s on display at the Ferens until September 18.
