Poignant ceremony for veterans

More than 80 Second World War veterans attended a poignant ceremony to ensure a treasured symbol of their dedication is kept on display for future generations.

The elderly veterans, from the now disbanded Air Gunners Association, travelled from across Britain to the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington, near York, yesterday, for the official laying up ceremony of their standard.

The association's standard was carried to the museum's Memorial Hangar, where it will be put on display. Ian Richardson, a spokesman for the museum, said: "It was a very moving occasion and will probably be the final gathering of veteran Air Gunners in significant numbers.

"After the Air Gunners Association was disbanded, its members requested for the standard to be laid up in the museum."
