Pointers for park visitors

New display boards at Barnsley's Dearne Valley Park were unveiled yesterday by Monk Bretton councillors Ken Richardson and Margaret Sheard, who is also this year's Mayor of Barnsley.

The boards have been designed to give visitors more information about their surroundings, particularly the area between the east of Pontefract Road Bridge in Holye Mill and the Transpennine Trail viaduct at Lundwood.

A Barnsley Council spokesman said: 'Using the new information boards visitors will be able to gain an insight into the history of the park, as well as knowing what viewpoints, wildlife and plants to look out for.

'The production of the boards has been made possible thanks to an 8,000 grant which has come from the housing development at Wilson Grove in Lundwood.

Barnsley Council is currently keen to encourage young people to care for and use the district's parks – and Darton Park is due to be at the centre of attention next week. Pupils from Darton High School will be planting more trees there on Tuesday while the sky above the park will glow with candlelight on Wednesday between 6pm and 8pm after Chinese lanterns are launched into the night.
