Pole walkers stride out across Yorkshire woods

WORKOUTS with a difference are set to take place at woodlands across South Yorkshire next month, led by rangers from the Forestry Commission.

Similar to cross-country skiing, Nordic walking involves hiking with two poles and works up to 90 per cent of muscles in the body.

Emily Holmes, one of three Forestry Commission rangers in South Yorkshire trained as Nordic walking instructors, said:

"It's become a real fitness craze, but it's here to stay because it's so much fun and does you a power of good."

One-hour sessions will be taking place in April and May at a number of woodlands.

Classes, each beginning at 6pm, will be held at Brodsworth Community Wood on April 14, April 21, April 28 and May 5, at Kiveton Community Wood on April 20, at Dinnington Community Wood on April 27 and on April 8 at Phoenix Park in Thurnscoe. Call 01302 820278 to book.
