Police act over street parking on football match days

POLICE are clamping down on parking in streets surrounding Huddersfield Town’s Galpharm Stadium on match days following concerns from residents.

Local people attending a meeting said they had problems getting to their properties and were also worried the emergency services would have difficulty getting through. Sgt Nicola Brown of the Huddersfield South Neighbourhood Policing Team said the issue raised at the meeting had now been set as one of the local priorities.

“Local people are concerned about the problems which affect Nether Hall, Rawthorpe Lane and Harpe Inge in particular.

“We have listened to these concerns and will be monitoring the area for anyone who parks illegally.

“I am aware of the difficulties of parking during a match day and of the high numbers of people descending on the area. It is, however; important that we do not forget the residents living locally and consider their safety.

“We are working with Huddersfield Town Football club to make fans aware of the parking issues and will be placing a message in the club’s programme.”

A spokesman for Huddersfield Town Football Club said: “We recognise the situation with parking at and around the stadium and we are constantly talking to the police about how to improve the facilities on offer.

“We have sought to alleviate some of the problems by finding suitable alternative parking at Rawthorpe High School, but unfortunately no-one was willing to use the facility.

“Also, we regularly highlight and encourage our supporters to use the pay and display car parks on St Andrew’s Road and also the Peel Street car park behind the Sports Centre. The walk is not too far and would prevent any inconvenience to local residents.”
