Police and RAF in safe driving link

A NEW scheme to promote safer driving among North Yorkshire youngsters has been launched by the police and RAF.

The Driving Safety Scheme, to introduce schoolchildren to the hazards associated with driving and raise awareness of the dangers of speeding, texting while driving and other potentially lethal hazards, will take place at RAF Leeming. Pupils will also be tested on their ability to stop a vehicle quickly with the help of a computer system that measures reflexes and reaction time.

Sergeant Richard O’Neil, of North Yorkshire Police, developed the project through working closely with youngsters at Bedale High School.

“This new initiative will improve the driving standards and awareness of young people”, he said.

“These pupils are the drivers of the future and it’s important to get the message across.

“This scheme will also help us to deal with and reduce anti-social behaviour.

“It will give valuable advice on how to behave behind the wheel of a car after passing a test and highlight the repercussions of bad driving practices.”
