Aireborough and Wharfedale Neighbourhood Policing Team has received information about three incidents of animals being shot in the Guiseley and Yeadon areas – but the Cats Protection League said that it had heard of at least seven. One cat has reportedly died as a result of its injuries.

Insp Richard Coldwell, of the NPT, said: “These incidents are clearly very distressing for the owners and their cats, and other pet owners in the area will understandably be concerned.

“To harm defenceless animals in such a cruel way is completely unacceptable. We don’t know exactly when or where the cats were shot and there are no known suspects so we would welcome any information from the local community that could help to identify those responsible.”

A spokesman for the Cats Protection League’s Wharfe Valley branch said: “This is a worrying development but sadly a recurring one. Whoever is responsible faces serious charges.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Aireborough & Wharfedale NPT via the non-emergency number 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
