The car was parked outside St John’s Church on Bilton Lane at around 8.40pm when it was damaged.

Officers had been called to the area to investigate reports of a group of youths throwing objects at other vehicles nearby.

Two male Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) had just got back into a marked Vauxhall Astra after speaking to potential witnesses and were about to set off when a teenage boy ran past and smashed the rear passenger-side door window with the black plastic pipe.

One of the PCSOs ran after the boy, and the group of youths he was with, but they split up and avoided being caught.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman described the incident as “deeply disturbing and potentially very dangerous” and has urged the public to contact police if they know who was responsible.

The teenager who damaged the police car was slim, about 5ft 6ins to 5ft 7ins tall and was wearing a black or dark-coloured coat with the hood up and black Adidas tracksuit bottoms with white stripes down to the knees.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the force on 101, quoting reference number 12180003428.
