Police arrest five men over 'mayhem' at mosque funeral service

Humberside Police made the arrests following the disturbance at the mosque on Parkinson Avenue in Scunthorpe on Tuesday night.

A police spokeswoman said the men burst in interrupting a service and were acting in an "anti-social manner".

Eyewitness Afzal Khan said: "Myself, along with a number of other people including women and children were inside the Mosque when the incident took place and I still am in shock at what happened.

"This is a place of worship that people attend on a daily basis and nobody should fear for their own safety."

Shortly after the disturbance officers arrested five men at an address on Frodingham Road.

A 30-year-old man, two 25-year-old men, a 24-year-old man and a 21-year-old man were in police custody at Scunthorpe Police Station yesterday.

Later, Chief Superintendent Pete Simmonds of Humberside Police said: "I would like to send a message to the local community that this type of incident will not be tolerated and will we will be working closely with our partners to help bring those responsible to justice."
