SENIOR police yesterday said they were investigating claims that a man found dead at his home had been assaulted by officers two days before.
The body of John Jeffrey, 50, was found at his house in Lindsay Avenue, Parson Cross, Sheffield, on Sunday, July 15.
Police launched a probe into the death but later ruled out any suspicious circumstances. It is now claimed Mr Jeffrey told a housing officer he had been “hit about the head” by a policeman in an incident on July 13.
A South Yorkshire police spokesman said the force had received a complaint, but the official police watchdog the Independent Police Complaints Commission has not been called in.
The spokesman added: “The force’s professional standards department is currently investigating an alleged assault on Mr Jeffrey by a South Yorkshire Police officer.
“This relates to an incident on June 28. Enquiries continue into this allegation.
“It is not believed that the incident on June 28 is linked to Mr Jeffrey’s death.”
