Police concerned over taxi defects

SAFETY checks on taxis in a North Yorkshire town found nearly all the vehicles stopped had faults.

North Yorkshire Police officers have pledged to carry out more spot-checks in Selby after their latest operation revealed a worrying number of problems.

Altogether 21 vehicles were checked for defects and to ensure their drivers were properly licensed during the four-hour operation on Friday evening.

Out of the vehicles that were stopped, five were issued with prohibition notices for faults including problems with steering, brakes and tyres. A further 12 were issued with advisory notices for mechanical defects.

Tc David Hunter led the initiative along with Selby District Council's licensing department and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA).

He said: "Members of the public have a right to expect that the taxis they use are safe and roadworthy and that the drivers are properly licensed.

"I give credit to those drivers who do maintain their vehicles correctly but sadly it appears that those who don't, often know their vehicles have defects but drive anyway. That isn't acceptable."
