Armed police were deployed after reports that a suspect armed with a knife was hiding in a railway tunnel, and large parts of the area were cordoned off.

A man was arrested at 11.30am at an address in the Ingrow area of the town. He remained in custody last night and was being questioned by detectives.

Neighbours reported hearing raised voices and a woman screaming at about 3.30am, while another claimed to have seen the boy in a man’s arms. Others wept when they learned of the tragedy and began to lay tributes in the snow outside the house.

A post-mortem examination to establish how the boy died took place yesterday.

He is expected to be formally identified today.
