Police cordon off estate in murder investigation

DETECTIVES cordoned off parts of a Leeds estate as they launched a murder inquiry following the death of a 21-year-old man.

Officers taped off a number of streets around Beckhill Chase in Meanwood yesterday, where
the body of the man, who has
not yet been identified, was
found on Tuesday, just before midnight.

A large patch of adjoining grassland was also guarded by police, and in nearby Stainbeck Road, a police forensics tent had been put in place over a phone box outside a parade of shops.

It is understood the phone box is believed to have been used to make a call reporting the man’s death

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Officers were called to the scene at 11.46pm and found the man with a serious chest injury.

“He was pronounced dead a short time later.

“An area around the property remains sealed off while a forensic search is carried out.”

Yesterday, at least eight police officers could be seen guarding the perimeter of the large cordon while forensic investigations
of the scene were being carried out.

Specialist officers in white coveralls could later be seen entering the rear of the property in Beckhill Chase.

Two police video vans were also on the scene.

At the phone box, a blue and white tent had been put in place and a nearby waste bin had also been covered.

Muhammad Arshad, who works at North Leeds Fisheries, directly behind the phone box, said he had been approached by a detective yesterday morning.

He said: “I came to work and saw the tent over the phone box. The detective came and asked if I’d seen anything but I said we had closed at 9pm. He told me there had been a murder nearby.”
