Police face dangerous driving charges

Two South Yorkshire police officers are due to appear in court charged with dangerous driving following an accident in which two children and a woman were seriously injured.

The charges relate to an incident on April 30 last year in which two unmarked South Yorkshire Police cars were in a crash with a Seat Alhambra people carrier on the north-bound carriageway of the M1 near to junction 34.

A woman and four children who were in the people carrier were taken to hospital. One of the children, an 11-year-old boy, had serious head injuries, while the woman had a serious arm injury and one of the other children a broken leg and internal injuries.

The two South Yorkshire Police officers have been summonsed to face charges of dangerous driving following an Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigation.

The IPCC independently investigated the incident after it was referred by South Yorkshire Police.

The two officers - a 53-year-old detective constable and a 40-year-old police constable - will appear before Leeds Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The officers involved have not been named.
