Police hunt Featherstone fan after attack at Grand Final leaves Halifax supporter critical

POLICE in Warrington are hunting a Featherstone rovers supporter after an assault left a Halifax fan with critical head injuries at last night's Championship Grand Final.

The 32 year-old victim was attacked following the match at the Halliwell Jones stadium, as he returned to to where his coach was parked.

He was taken to Warrington's Walton Hospital for emergency surgery, and remains in a critical condition.

Police say offender may have been a Featherstone Rovers supporter who got on to a coach for

returning Halifax fans.

Cheshire Police are appealing for witnesses, who are asked to call 0845 4580000 or Crimestoppers ananymously on 0800 555111.

In a separate incident, hundreds of Halifax fans fled onto the pitch after a fire broke out in their stand midway through the game.

The match, which Halifax won 23-22 with a dramatic late winner, was delayed for 45 minutes while firefighters battled the blaze.

No-one was hurt in the incident.
