They were called by staff at Hull Royal Infirmary at 11.53am on Monday. Two people in their 20s were arrested and remain in custody after detectives were granted a further 32 hours to question them yesterday.

Det Supt Dena Fleming, who is leading the inquiry, said: "We suspect there are non-accidental injuries but until we get the results of the post-mortem I won't have cause of death."

A house in Davidstow Close on the city's Bransholme estate has been cordoned off and is being guarded by uniformed officers.

Neighbour Graham Harrison, 54, an electrician, said: "The police came round and said they were investigating the death of a child. I've only seen the couple once.

"It's a rented property to a private landlord. There are no curtains in the house or anything up in the windows, which I always thought was strange."

"We're waiting to find out what happened. It's just so shocking."

An spokesman for the trust, Mike Wright, said: "As this is now a police investigation the trust is unable to comment at this time."
